Human Resource & Health Care Management

Parentwell

Parentwell is an innovative online platform that provides support to new and expectant parents in the workplace. Created through a collaboration between Transitioning Well and COPE, with funding from the Federal Department of Health and Aged Care, Parentwell offers a range of resources and tools to assist parents during the transition to parenthood.

The platform’s unique feature lies in its comprehensive leave planner journey, empowering expected parents to manage leaves, schedules, and view them on an accessible dashboard. Additionally, Parentwell boasts a well-curated resources library catering to the needs of soon-to-be parents.

Client Background and Challenge:

Parentwell wanted a user-friendly online platform to support parents in Australia. They needed help with managing leaves, schedules, and calendars while offering valuable resources for maintaining mental health and wellbeing during this important event. The goal was to empower working parents and provide them with a comprehensive solution for parental support.

Dom Kips, a UI/UX designer, spearheaded the Parentwell project and sought a team of experts to build a fully functional product within three months without compromising quality and essential features.

Since the project was huge, we divided it into two parts. The first part was to create the main product within three months, which was a huge challenge for both us and the clients. We had to build everything from the beginning in a short time. Parentwell faced some decisions about whether to use Google API or create their own solution. And during the development phase, we needed to clarify some details about certain features.

The second part of the project was completed recently where we added more features such as user authentication and authorisation features, scaling up the database for relationship management, disconnect feature, and many more.

Our Role in the Project:

Our main challenge was to keep up with the technical aspects of the platform and provide new UX/UI solutions for landing pages, blog, and tech documentation interfaces.

01

Discovery & Design Phase

During the discovery and design phase, the client had clear requirements and a well-defined scope for the product. Our team quickly understood and aligned with the client’s vision. The tech lead, product manager, and project manager brainstormed ways to make the features and user journeys better, all while making sure they fit perfectly with the client’s design preferences.

02

Development and Technology

Phase 1:

Parentwell’s backend, the core engine of the platform, was developed using Django, a powerful and reliable technology. For the frontend, we used a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create a visually appealing and user-friendly interface.

To store and manage all the data, we utilised a robust SQL database. This allowed us to efficiently handle large amounts of information while ensuring data integrity and security.

To efficiently handle all the planned features within the given timeline, we kept the end-users in mind throughout the process. We worked to simplify the technical complexities and improve the overall user experience of the product. This approach allowed us to create a seamless and user-friendly platform that met both the client’s expectations and the needs of the target audience.

Phase 2:
In the second phase, we needed to improve the product and synchronise every invited parent in the lead planner journey. Our tech lead had a long-term vision and scaled up the database for better relationship management. The product manager and project manager addressed scope creep and collaboratively built essential features for the MVP.

We maintained a backlog for pending features and updates planned for phase 2 and phase 3. With careful planning, we efficiently handled the determined scope and focused on building what users truly needed, ensuring that 20 percent of the product catered to 80 percent of their needs. Phase 2 included implementing robust user authentication, scaling up the database, and introducing a disconnection feature for users.

03

QA/Testing

Throughout the development process, our Quality Assurance (QA) team played a crucial role in ensuring the product’s quality and performance. They conducted frequent demo sessions and validation with the client to make sure everything was working as expected.

This included various types of testing, like regression testing to catch any issues that might arise when new features are added, functional testing to ensure all features work as intended, smoke and sanity testing to check the most critical functionalities, and design verification to confirm that the platform looked and felt just right.

By conducting these rigorous tests, we ensured that Parentwell was a reliable and user-friendly platform, ready to serve the needs of new and expectant parents.

04

Post-Launch Support

During the first phase of post-launch support, the standard one-week free support was extended to one month to accommodate our client’s requirements. Our team was more than happy to provide this extra support to ensure a seamless experience for the client. Throughout this period, we diligently handled any identified bugs and made minor scope changes as needed. For instance, we addressed issues related to font changes, colour palettes, buttons, notifications, and alerts to enhance the overall user experience. Our goal was to fine-tune the product and address any specific requests from the client during this crucial period of initial implementation.

As for the second phase, the recent launch was a success and we have provided the client with one week of free support.

05

Project Execution

Phase 1:

During Phase 1 of the project, we followed a scrum model, which allowed us to efficiently manage the development process. We carefully planned and organised tasks and backlogs for each milestone, ensuring that we stayed on track and met the set deadlines. This approach helped us maintain a structured and organised workflow, ensuring that all team members were aligned and focused on delivering the required features and functionalities in a timely manner.

Phase 2:

In Phase 2, we adopted an ad-hoc and Kanban framework, maintaining a backlog for pending features and updates. This approach allowed us to be more responsive to client needs and efficiently prioritise and manage additional functionalities. The Kanban framework provided a visual overview of task progress, ensuring the most important items were addressed promptly. This agile approach facilitated a seamless development process, enabling us to deliver results efficiently in Phase 2 of the project.

06

Communication

We communicated regularly with the client through virtual calls, initially twice a week, and later shifted to weekly calls after the product launch. Additionally, we provided documentation and text updates to keep them informed about the project’s progress and any changes. This approach ensured effective collaboration and meeting the client’s goals.

The Result

Phase 1:

The final result of the project was a remarkable achievement for both the team and the client. The Leave Planner Journey, which was a crucial part of the Minimum Viable Product (MVP), not only met the client’s expectations but also successfully addressed some of the challenges they were facing.

One of the major accomplishments of the project was the creation of a custom-made calendar that seamlessly synchronised with Google Calendar. This feature enabled easy management of leaves and schedules, providing expectant parents and their managers with a user-friendly interface for tracking and planning.

Despite the project’s complexity and the ambitious three-month timeline, the team demonstrated exceptional skills and dedication to deliver a fully functional product. They successfully navigated through the challenges, resolving technical hurdles, and ensuring the product’s quality and performance.

As a result, the product received positive feedback from end users, and its popularity in the market continues to grow steadily. The team’s ability to deliver a feature-rich product within such a short timeframe showcases their expertise in agile development and problem-solving skills.

Phase 2:

In the second phase of the product launch, we introduced several new features and improvements to enhance the user experience and functionality of Parentwell. Thorough user authentication and authorization features were implemented to ensure data security and privacy.

The database was scaled up to handle a growing number of users and relationships within the platform. We also introduced a disconnection feature that allowed users to opt-out of certain features or interactions if they preferred not to participate. With these enhancements, Parentwell continued to gain traction among users, and the platform further solidified its position as a valuable resource for new and expectant parents seeking support during their journey to parenthood.
